Attacking Biblical Statements for a “fixed” and “immovable” Earth

I Chronicles 16:30: “He has fixed the earth firm, immovable.”

Psalm 93:1: “Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm…”

Psalm 96:10: “He has fixed the earth firm, immovable…”

Psalm 104:5: “Thou has fixed the earth on its foundation so that it never can be shaken.”

Isaiah 45:18: “…who made the earth and fashioned it, and himself fixed it fast…”

Of course these verses are wrong to claim be “fixed” and “immovable” the Earth’s spins as well as orbits around the sun, but it does not stop there. The Earth’s orbital geometry is not fixed over time. Indeed, long-term variations of the Earth’s orbit may help explain the waxing and waning of global climate in the last several million years. And there is more that is not “fixed” and “immovable” about the earth. Christians can’t say it’s just some error in the bible writers as jesus never stated any parts of the jewish bible (old testament) had any errors. Jesus never said that the Scriptures contain the Word of God. He said that they were the Word of God. Jesus acknowledged this when He said that the Word of God, the Scripture, cannot be broken. This means that it cannot fail. Why? because the written form of the Word of God, which is Scripture, is inspired. And because it is inspired, it cannot fail. It must be fulfilled. Remember, Jesus called the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms (all of the Old Testament) Scripture, and He says that the Scriptures cannot be broken–cannot fail. He was obviously referring to the written form of the Old Testament:

  • Luke 24:44-45, “Now He said to them, These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.”
  • John 10:35 “If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken).”

If a citation of a city was incorrect, is that not a failure of Scripture? If a date is wrong, is that not a failure of Scripture? Likewise, would not an error in a fact likewise be a failure in the Scripture? Of course it would! But Jesus says that the Scriptures cannot be broken. They cannot fail. Is Jesus wrong? Ref

Here are some other things that prove it was wrong to claim that the Earth is “fixed” and “immovable.” 

Orbital Fluctuation

The planet’s distance from the Sun also varies as it orbits. In fact, the Earth is never the same distance from the Sun from day to day. When the Earth is closest to the Sun, it is said to be at perihelion. As the Earth spins around its axis and orbits around the Sun, several quasi-periodic variations occur due to gravitational interactions. Orbital Fluctuation occurs due to changes in the orbital eccentricity, obliquity, and precession of Earth’s movements. Such changes in movement and orientation alter the amount and location of solar radiation reaching the Earth. This is known as solar forcing (an example of radiative forcing). The Earth’s eccentricity varies primarily due to interactions with the gravitational fields of Jupiter and Saturn. Ref

Plate Tectonics

Earth is the only planet in the Solar System with plate tectonics. The outer crust of the Earth is broken up into regions known as tectonic plates. These are floating on top of the magma interior of the Earth and can move against one another. When two plates collide, one plate can go underneath another. The driving force behind plate tectonics is convection in the mantle. Hot material near the Earth’s core rises, and colder mantle rock sinks, kind of like a pot boiling on a stove. The convection drive plates tectonics through a combination of pushing and spreading apart at mid-ocean ridges and pulling and sinking downward at subduction zones, researchers think. Scientists continue to study and debate the mechanisms that move the plates. While the Earth is 4.54 billion years old, because oceanic crust is constantly recycled at subduction zones, the oldest seafloor is only about 200 million years old. As the continents jostle around the Earth, they occasionally come together to form giant supercontinents, a single landmass. One of the earliest big supercontinents, called Rodinia, assembled about 1 billion years ago. Its breakup is linked to a global glaciation called Snowball Earth. A more recent supercontinent called Pangaea formed about 300 million years ago. Africa, South America, North America and Europe nestled closely together, leaving a characteristic pattern of fossils and rocks for geologists to decipher once Pangaea broke apart. The puzzle pieces left behind by Pangaea, from fossils to the matching shorelines along the Atlantic Ocean, provided the first hints that the Earth’s continents move. Ref

Axial Tilt Fluctuation

The angle of the Earth’s axial tilt (obliquity of the ecliptic) varies with respect to the plane of the Earth’s orbit. In astronomy, axial tilt, also known as obliquity and these slow 2.4° obliquity variations are roughly periodic, taking approximately 41,000 years to shift between a tilt of 22.1° and 24.5° and back again. When the obliquity increases, the amplitude of the seasonal cycle in insolation increases, with summers in both hemispheres receiving more radiative flux from the Sun, and winters less. Ref

Magnetic Pole Fluctuation

Earth’s polarity is not a constant. Scientists understand that Earth’s magnetic field has flipped its polarity many times over the millennia. the matter governing Earth’s magnetic field moves around. Geophysicists are pretty sure that the reason Earth has a magnetic field is because its solid iron core is surrounded by a fluid ocean of hot, liquid metal. Ref

Gravitational Fluctuation

Earth’s gravity field fluctuates from place to place depending on the planet’s rotation and the presence of mountains or ocean trenches. But gravitational fluctuations can shift as well such as how a gravity shifting is being seen even now as one of the latest victim of climate change in Antarctica. That’s the stunning conclusion announced Friday by the European Space Agency. “The loss of ice from West Antarctica between 2009 and 2012 caused a dip in the gravity field over the region,” writes the ESA, whose GOCE satellite measured the change. Axial Precession

In astronomy, axial precession is a gravity-induced, slow, and continuous change in the orientation of an astronomical body’s rotational axis. In particular, it can refer to the gradual shift in the orientation of Earth’s axis of rotation, which, similar to a wobbling top, traces out a pair of cones joined at their apices in a cycle of approximately 26,000 years. The term “precession” typically refers only to this largest part of the motion; other changes in the alignment of Earth’s axis—nutation and polar motion—are much smaller in magnitude. Earth’s precession was historically called the precession of the equinoxes, because the equinoxes moved westward along the ecliptic relative to the fixed stars, opposite to the yearly motion of the Sun along the ecliptic. Apsidal Precession

In celestial mechanics, perihelion precession, apsidal precession or orbital precession is the precession (rotation) of the orbit of a celestial body. More precisely, it is the gradual rotation of the line joining the apsides of an orbit, which are the points of closest and farthest approach. Perihelion is the closest point to the Sun. Because of apsidal precession the Earth’s argument of periapsis slowly increases; it takes about 112000 years for the ellipse to revolve once relative to the fixed stars. There are a variety of factors which can lead to periastron precession, such as general relativity, stellar quadrupole moments, mutual star–planet tidal deformations, and perturbations from other planets. Orbital Inclination

The inclination of Earth’s orbit drifts up and down relative to its present orbit which is a three-dimensional movement known as “precession of the ecliptic” or “planetary precession”. The invariable plane, the plane that represents the angular momentum of the Solar System, is approximately the orbital plane of Jupiter.
